Scripture for the Day December 26, 2018

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (John 11:26)

This devotional is written with a heavy heart and at the same time with a rejoicing over a life well lived. In the early morning hours of December 24 we received a phone call from Zachary, our 17 year old grandson in Memphis, TN. He explained to us that several hours earlier they had experienced a house fire at their home in Memphis. Zachary had been out for the evening and when he returned home the firetrucks were already at their home.

The people in the home when the fire started were my son Danny, his wife Kari, their son Cole, and three teenage foreign exchange students from India. They were all on the second floor when the fire broke out on the first floor and it trapped them upstairs. Danny broke out a window on the second floor and was immediately sucked out of that window and hit the ground two stories down.

The firemen caught Cole as he jumped out of another upstairs window a minute later but they could not reach Kari or the three students before they succumbed to the smoke. Danny and Cole have been in the hospital for the last two days due to smoke inhalation.

As heartbroken as we are, we know where our granddaughter is. Kari was a 46 year old strong Holy Ghost woman of God. She raised and home schooled all her children (3 sons and one daughter) to be just as strong as her. She was a wonderful wife to our son and they had a great marriage.

Now, here are the things we would ask you to pray for because we know as ministers how the enemy operates:

  1. Pray against condemnation and survivor’s guilt – The enemy is the accuser of the brethren and he will use this situation to bring up a multitude of things in Danny’s mind that could have or should have been done to prevent this fire or facilitate a rescue.
  2.  Pray against blaming God – This was a direct attack from the enemy who comes to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). God did not plan, sanction, approve, or allow such an attack. That is not something that the God we serve would do. If anything good comes from this (and you can pray for that also) then that will be God!!
  3.  Pray for us to have wisdom to minister to all our family members through this tragic event.

On behalf of our entire son’s family, thank all of you for your many phone calls and prayers!!!
