Scripture for the Day (November 22, 2016)

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

One of the things that I see in certain branches of Christianity today is the reluctance to relate Biblical writings and Biblical history to present day events. Some people think you are a religious nut if you make such comparisons and yet the Word of God instructs us to do just that.

Now these things happened to them as an example and warning [to us]; they were written for our instruction [to admonish and equip us], upon whom the ends of the ages have come. (1 Corinthians 10:11, Amplified Bible)

Even if you just look at things from a worldly perspective you are doomed to failure if you don’t consider historical circumstances and events. George Santayana said it like this in The Life of Reason, 1905: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” How much more should we consider the Word of God which was written specifically for us to help us overcome.

All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of
sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; (2 Timothy 3:16, Amplified Bible)

The Bible is not just a historical book. It is a living and breathing instruction manual for life. It is a road map that shows all the detours and pitfalls that should be avoided. It is a prophetic picture of events and challenges we will face in the future. It is similar to a great coach that is constantly telling you that you can do this, you can overcome, and you can make a difference. It fosters hope and encouragement. It provides peace in the times of turmoil and healing in the times of hurt. No other document can do those things.

The Bible will also give you wisdom in times of question. In the last few months certain books in the Old Testament have provided so much insight to me into our present election. It is amazing what you can learn from looking at the former Kings and Judges in the Old Testament and how they were selected and how they performed. When you see how God viewed these situations and what was important to Him it can give you a whole new perspective on the decision you should make as a believer.

I encourage you to make your decisions and plant your flag on what God thinks and says versus what politicians or the media says. Politicians and media types change with the wind but God will never change. He is not a man to lie so He will always provide you with the truth. You just have to seek and knock. You just have to ask. You just have to spend time with Him and His Word.
