Scripture for the Day (January 3, 2017)
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. (John 14:12)
As believers, we are called by Jesus to do greater works than He did! You may ask, “Jesus, how is that even possible? Surely you don’t mean we are to do the same miracles you did while walking this Earth?” As we read the Word of God we find out that is exactly what He meant and that the power to do these greater works is tied directly to receiving the Holy Spirit. In John 16:7 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
John the Baptist said, I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matthew 3:11)
Acts 1:8 says, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses.”
Luke 24:49 says, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” It’s pretty clear in this verse that the promise of the Father was going to be an endowment of power like the world had never seen.
Acts 1:4 says,” …wait for the promise of the father, which you have heard from me. For John truly baptized with water; you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence.” Jesus said the promise of the Father was an endowment of power accompanied by a unique event; an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which would provide something new for the church. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Acts 2:39)
It doesn’t matter what denomination you are a part of. It matters if you’ve been born again and endued with power, which are two separate events. In the words of D.L. Moody, “There are people behind the pulpits and in our pews, in whom the Holy Spirit lives, but upon whom the Holy Spirit has not come with power.”
When Jesus ascended back to Heaven He told them to wait in Jerusalem. Now it would no longer be necessary for Jesus to be present with them. Now the Spirit of God would come upon them as He had anointed Jesus of Nazareth, and he would give the church the power that was exercised previously only by the Son of God. That’s what was coming to the church, personal access to power. When the day of Pentecost came, that power came also.
How do you receive this power? You simply ask! If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? (Luke 11:13)
