Scripture for the Day (March 27, 2017)

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)

Did you know that God wants to talk to us? He wants to give us wisdom. He wants to give us direction. He is just waiting on us to ask and then listen for His response. We are usually good at talking a lot but sometimes we are not so good at listening.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)

You have not because you ask not. (James 4:2)

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: (James 1:19)

There have been multiple times in my walk with the Lord when God spoke to me and gave me clear direction on what to do. He can speak to you also in many different ways but the most common are through His Word, through another person, through circumstances, or directly. The most powerful (in my opinion) is when He says something to you directly.

We were preparing to minister in a church this last Sunday and thought we knew what we were going to teach. God changed all that on Saturday morning when He spoke a word to me about the importance of hearing His voice. What He spoke to me involved the following scripture:

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

I had always been taught and believed that this scripture was referring to the written and preached Word of God, and it does. But God has a way of reminding us that He is a lot smarter than us. This is what I heard God say. What about my voice? Is that not the Word of God? Does that not build your faith?

All of a sudden, my understanding of the Word of God has been expanded to include the voice of God. That may seem insignificant to some, but it is huge to me. It is a reminder to me that we have such a tendency to limit God. The Word of God is so much deeper than we think. There are treasures in the Word that God wants to show us and most are so simple that we just miss them and the only way they will be unveiled is by the voice of God.

‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you [and even show you] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which you do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.’ (Jeremiah 33:3)
