Scripture for the Day (May 18, 2017)

Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy. How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan. (Psalm 78:41-43)

Psalm 78 is an account of the constant struggle that God had with the Jewish people in their miraculous exodus from Egypt. They were constantly complaining, never satisfied, erected idols to worship, and on and on. Now, before we get too critical of the Jewish people’s journey through the wilderness, we might do well to look at our own journeys.

Now these things happened to them as an example and warning [to us]; they were written for our instruction [to admonish and equip us], upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let the one who thinks he stands firm [immune to temptation, being overconfident and self-righteous], take care that he does not fall [into sin and condemnation]. (1 Corinthians 10:11-12, Amplified Bible)

As I read through Psalm 78 there is one particular instruction from God that jumped out at me. God was big (and He still is) on teaching the children (natural and spiritual children) about all the signs and wonders that had been done by God and are still available from God today through the Holy Spirit.

We will not hide them from their children, But [we will] tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, And [tell of] His great might and power and the wonderful works that He has done. For He established a testimony (a specific precept) in Jacob. And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach to their children [the great facts of God’s transactions with Israel], That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born May arise and recount them to their children, (Psalm 78:4-6, Amplified Bible)

As you read on in Psalm 78 you see where the children of Ephraim turned back in the day of battle because they forgot (or were not taught about) the marvelous works and wonders that God had accomplished in the sight of their fathers.

We live in a world that constantly wants to limit God. We listen to non-biblical doctrines and teachings that tell us that God doesn’t do miracles anymore. We don’t teach our children about the power of God and the gifts of the Spirit that are available to them. We don’t share with our natural children or our spiritual children the marvelous works and wonders of God. Talk about limiting God! Why do we do these type things? Are we worried about what people will think of us? Do we want to fit in with the crowd? Are we afraid we will be labelled a religious nut? GET OVER IT!!! Quit limiting God!!!

The real question is this. Are we turning back, just like the Jewish people were doing? If we do that we’re not just limiting God in our own life, but we are limiting God in the lives of generations to come. We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of our testimony. Your testimony about the marvelous works and wonders of God needs to be passed on and the only way that is going to happen is for you and I to have the courage to tell our spiritual and natural children.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8)
