Scripture for the Day (May 30, 2017)
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. (Proverbs 3:24)
Our current Secretary of Defense, General James “Mad Dog” Mattis, was recently asked by a news reporter what kept him awake at night? His response was, “Nothing, I keep others awake at night.” What a great statement from a great Marine General. It’s no wonder that our military men and women have been eager to follow him into battle. The words of General Mattis tell a story about who he is as a warrior and who he is as a leader. He is a General that is confident in the weapons and armed forces he has available to him. He is not afraid of the enemy and he is always on the offensive rather than being constantly on the defensive. We could learn a lot from General Mattis about spiritual warfare.
Let me ask all of you believers out there a question. Does the enemy keep you awake at night? If he does, I want you to take stock of the power, the weapons of our warfare, and the heavenly forces that are available to us as Christians by reading the following scriptures:
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Luke 10:19)
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. (James 2:19)
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10: 3-5)
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (Joshua 1:9)
And when the servant of the man of God (Elisha) was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an (enemy) host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he (Elisha) answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire (an angelic force) round about Elisha. (2 King 6:15-17)
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. (Psalm 91:11)
As General Mattis said, you are the one that should be keeping the enemy up at night. If there is any fear involved, it should not be coming from us but from the enemy. Our weapons are superior! Our forces are superior! Our God is superior! So, go get a good night’s sleep.
