Scripture for the Day (October 12, 2017)
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3)
I have been saved and reading the Word of God for 35 years but I heard something the other day from a minister that I had never heard before. Every teaching I had previously heard on faith taught that the opposite of faith is doubt and fear. This particular minister did not see it that way. He said that the opposite of faith is “sight”.
Think about that for a minute! I think he’s right. It is one of those things that is so simple that we miss it. That’s usually a good sign that it is a revelation. Consider the following scriptures:
(For we walk by faith, not by sight) (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
I preached a message years ago about visible versus invisible which goes down this same road.
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (Colossians 1:16)
The gist of the message I preached was this. Everything that you see in the natural is temporal and will eventually pass away (even you). The things that you don’t see (the invisible things) are eternal and will never pass away.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)
So, that means the invisible is more real than the visible and that is why the scripture tell us the following:
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)
It seems that one of the major problems we have today in our culture is that most people (including Christians) are looking at what they see and not what they don’t see. They have set their affections on their cell phones, notebooks and computer screens. They are concentrating on the visible rather than the invisible and that is the opposite of faith. We get so wrapped up in the news and social media that we forget that all that stuff is temporal (if not fake all together).
People are spending more and more time on their social media devices, and news programs, than ever before. We need to call some personal fasts on those devices and start setting our affections on the things above which are eternal and true. We need to take authority over our flesh. My great Pastor friend Guy Iannello said something in one of his sermons last week that really jumped into my sermon book (that means I stole it from him). He said your flesh will never commit suicide. You will have to kill it! How true that is. We can do that by just obeying what the Word tells us to do. It’s that simple!
