Scripture for the Day (June 1, 2016)
Hair that is turning white is like a crown of honor. It is found in the way of being right with God. (Proverbs 16:31, NLV)
On June 3, 2016 my wife Cheryl and I will celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary. Of course, this means we are both getting a little older in the process but at the same time we’ve gained a lot of wisdom over 49 years of marriage and 34 years of ministry. This devotional is dedicated to all of us seniors that still have a lot left to give. God is not through with us yet. Our best years are still ahead of us so get ready!
The following are a few thoughts on what we are called to do:
1. We are called to speak to and make demands on the enemy. Moses and Aaron were over 80 years old when they told Pharaoh to “let my people go”. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three when they made their demands to Pharaoh. (Exodus 7:7, NLT).
2. We are called to feed the flock of God. The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. (1 Peter 5:1-4)
3. We are called to pray for the sick. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (James 5:14)
4. We are called to continue bearing much fruit. We are not finished bearing fruit. Some of the best fruit is produced in old age. Even in old age they will still produce fruit and be vital and green. (Psalm 92:14)
Seniors, be encouraged today. God is not through with you. Take every opportunity you can to speak to and make demands on the enemy, feed the flock, pray for the sick, and bear much fruit. You are needed in the Body of Christ!
Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? (Job 12:12, NIV)
