Scriptures for the Day (May 9, 2018)

And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. (2 Samuel 6:14-15)

Over the last 36 years of ministry my wife and I have been in many different churches. We have been in churches with music and churches without music. We have been in churches with choirs at the front of the church and churches with choirs at the back. We’ve been in full-gospel Holy Ghost churches and we’ve been in your old line traditional evangelical churches. We have been in churches that dance and churches that don’t dance. It’s just amazing the diversity we have in this country in the Christian churches.

We presently belong to a church where our membership is made up of 70% black and 30% white. It is a full-gospel church that has all kinds of instruments, musicians, and dancers. Our Pastor is white so the black community outside our church considers us a white church. The white community outside our church considers us a black church due to our membership percentages. We just consider ourselves “the church” who is not ashamed to worship the Lord with abandon and allow the Holy Ghost freedom to operate in our midst.

King David was a man after God’s own heart. When bringing the Ark of God (the presence of God) into the city of David he was not silent about it. Music led the way! And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah:

and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. (2 Samuel 6:3-5)

And when David finally made it to the city of David with the Ark he danced before the Lord.

And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. (2 Samuel 6:14-15)

Now, some people are not happy with all this music and dancing. David’s wife Michal was one of them. The scripture says she despised David in her heart for this and thought he was just shameless. David’s response to her was as follows:

And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord. And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour. (2 Samuel 6:21-22)

Because of Michal’s response to David she had no children. She was barren unto death. Let’s not be a people that is barren. Let us not be a people that are ashamed to worship God with music and dancing.
