Scripture for the Day (July 19, 2016)
For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
The definition of the word vital from Webster’s New World Dictionary is “essential to life; being the seat or source of life; necessary for the existence, continuance, or wellbeing of something; indispensable; essential; critical importance”. There are just not enough adjectives in the English language to describe the vitalness of the Word of God. The reading, teaching, preaching, and hearing of the Word of God are all essentials to life.
The following are just a few of the reasons why it is so important for all of us to understand and fully grasp this tremendous truth:
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14)
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)
Then said the Lord to me, You have seen well, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it. (Jeremiah 1:12, Amplified)
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. (Proverbs 4:20-22)
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. (Psalm 107.20)
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (Ephesians 6:13-17)
Forever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven. (Psalm 119:89)
As important as other elements of the Christian life are, like prayer and praise and worship, they can never replace the vitalness of the Word of God. His Word is alive and it is our source of life and truth. It is our road map, our sword, our protector, and our wisdom. The Word is our firm foundation, our hope, and our salvation. Without the Word, we are a lost and hopeless people.
We encourage you today to fall in love with the Word of God. Read it! Listen to it! Pray it! It will love you back in a way that you cannot even imagine.
