Scripture for the Day (August 5, 2016)
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him (Acts 10:38).
After leaving the wilderness and after learning that John had been put into prison, Jesus departed to Galilee. Then He went to Nazareth where He had been raised, and as His custom was, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. When they handed Him the book of the prophet Isaiah, He opened the book and He read:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).
Then He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. He told them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). Needless to say, this caused quite a stir in the synagogue, and they even attempted to kill Him. But the point is this. Jesus defined the anointing of the Holy Spirit. He said because the Holy Spirit had anointed Him, He was commissioned to do the following things: 1) preach the gospel to the poor 2) heal the brokenhearted 3) proclaim liberty to the captives 4) heal the blind 5) release people who are oppressed 6) and proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
When the Holy Spirit is present today His anointing seeks to accomplish those same purposes. We cannot limit the Holy Spirit to one gift, one manifestation, one fruit, or one administrative gift. We must allow Him to work to the fullness of His purpose in our lives and in our churches. It has been my experience that when one gift is exalted above all others it tends to attract people with that same gift and things can quickly get out of balance. For example, a church full of nothing but prophets can get weird quickly. We need all the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Church. When they are all working in concert they bring balance and harmony and you will have a healthy church. The Word will be taught with anointing. You will experience salvations, healings and miracles and the love of God will be manifested.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. (Romans 12:6-15)
