Abide

Scripture Of The Day

"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me." John 15:4 NIV

By Cheryl Henderson

"Abide" means to remain, dwell, or stay connected with God. To "Abide" in Christ is not a one-time decision but an ongoing dependence. Jesus compares our life to branches and Himself to the vine—our nourishment, strength, and identity come from staying connected to Him. Abiding means regular communion: listening to His voice, obeying His word, receiving His love, and letting the Holy Spirit shape our desires. When we try to live apart from Jesus, we may perform activity, but we won’t produce lasting fruit—love, joy, patience, or witness. Abiding changes the root of our actions so the fruit reflects Christ, not effort.

Practical steps to abide

• Start each day with a brief silence and a Scripture sentence, inviting Jesus into the hours ahead.

• Practice quick, honest prayers throughout the day—short check-ins that refocus your heart.

• Obey small promptings of love and truth; obedience keeps the connection alive.

• Stay in a Christian community where encouragement and accountability nourish your root.

Jesus promises life and fruitfulness to those who remain in Him. The challenge is relinquishing self-sufficiency and embracing dependence—trusting that remaining, not striving, produces spiritual growth. I pray today that you abide in Him!
