Guard Your Heart

By Cheryl Henderson

What does it mean to guard your heart? Well, practically, it means examining our attitudes and thoughts regularly and making adjustments as needed.

Everything with the Lord is a heart issue. The Bible talks about the heart as the control center of your personhood; it's the center of your thoughts, it's the center of your desires, emotions, purposes, and motivations. It is what drives you, this is what controls you, this is what shapes your living. You must be concerned about your heart because life comes out of your heart. And the Proverbs would tell us the way to guard your heart is to have a Godward heart, to surrender your heart to the will and the way, the presence and the glory, of this Mighty God we serve.

Some ways to guard our hearts.

1. Watch what comes out of our mouths. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. ( Prov. 18:21)

Luke 6:45 says that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Guard your heart..

2. Keep your eyes. There is much going on in this world, and it seems that there are lots of things to look at. Your eyes are one of the gateways or windows to your soul. Your soul is your mind, will, and emotions. Whatever is in your heart will come out.

3. Be single-minded. Remember that a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways and will get nothing from God. (James 1:7) Also, set your mind on who you are in Christ. Whatever a man thinketh in his heart...so is he ( Proverbs 23:7)

What you speak, what you watch, and what you think are all things the enemy wants to pollute. Guard your heart and speak God's Word, keep your eyes on Jesus, and know who you are in Christ and use your authority.
