The Brass Ring

Scripture Of The Day

"I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind" Ecclesiastes 1:14

By Cheryl Henderson

I read a story recently about the beautiful carousels made in Europe. They are beautifully made in elegance and with colorful art. Their traditional way of making these carousels is to have them go clockwise so that the proper equestrians can mount the ornately carved wooden horses from the left.

However, Americans are less concerned with proper equestrian form than they are with the opportunity to acquire the most sought-after brass ring. American carousels were designed in the nineteenth century to travel counterclockwise, allowing riders to grab for the brass ring with their right hand. Any rider who reached out and grabbed the ring would be given a prize- a free ride on the carousel. In time, grabbing the brass ring became a metaphor for success and opportunity.

After being around The Marketplace for 30 years, I have come to notice what true success is. It comes from setting goals, learning from mistakes, and strong faith, perseverance, and honest hard work. Those who do not move in that mindset will ride a carousel seeking worldly success and will grasp for the ring in vain. Mr. Brig Hart describes Ultimate Success as,” Knowing God’s perfect will for your life and doing it.” Instead of reaching out for a shiny brass ring, let’s reach out to Jesus!
