Scripture for the Day – May 5, 2020
John 2:23-25: Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
The Amplified Bible says, “But when He was in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast, many believed in His name [identified themselves with His party] after seeing His signs (wonders, miracles) which He was doing.But Jesus [for His part] did not trust Himself to them, because He knew all [men]; And He did not need anyone to bear witness concerning man [needed no evidence from anyone about men], for He Himself knew what was in human nature. [He could read men’s hearts.]”
I have heard many people who intentionally did things that were contrary to God’s Word say that God knew their heart. In other words, they were saying that their heart was right even though they were doing wrong. Yes, these people were right. God does see their heart because I Samuel 16:7 says, “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’” People who are continually practicing sin but are saying “God knows my heart”, are right. God does see their heart, and He can see that it isn’t right.
Luke 16:15 says, “And he said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.'” If our hearts are right and pure, our lives, (everything we say and do), will be right.
Luke 6:45 says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Mark 7:6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.'”
Proverbs 21:2 says, “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.”
Matthew 12:33-34 says, “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
What’s really in your heart is what will consistently come out of your mouth and control your actions!
Psalm 139:23 should be our prayer every day, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:”
The great news is that God is in the heart-changing business!
