He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew 11:15)

Jesus was continually using the phrase “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” with His disciples in the four Gospels and with the Church throughout The Book of Revelation. This phrase suggests that they could, and we could, have ears that are dull of hearing. Let’s take a closer look at what we need to do to develop “ears to hear” and how God speaks to us today.
1. You must be born again to even be able to see (and hear) the kingdom of God (John 3:3). To His disciples only is given the ability to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 13:11). But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear (Matthew 13:16)
2. For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should be converted, and I should heal them (Matthew 13:15). The first step in developing ears to hear is to totally surrender to the Lord. Our ears are full of worldly wax when we are not born again and the sounds from Heaven are muffled and distorted by the noise of the world. We are like a radio or television receiver that is receiving nothing but static on the God channels. When you get plugged into Him, you can automatically receive His programs.
Now, God has innumerable ways to talk to you, if you will just be open to listening. The most common ways He speaks to us is through reading His Word, through personal prayer, through His Spirit, through His peace, through circumstances, and through other people. These are just a few ways but don’t put God in a box. He can have a donkey talk to you if He needs to (Numbers 22:28).
A couple of tips however:
* God will not normally write you a message in the clouds. He could, but not normally.
* God will not normally appear in bodily form and have a conversation with you. He could, but not normally.
* It is more likely that you will hear Him by a revelation from reading His Word; an impression through His Spirit; the lack of peace about a crucial decision; or a quote from an unsuspecting source (like a child or neighbor) that suddenly turns a light bulb on in your head.
We are living in times that are crucial for us to learn how to hear God and be led by His Spirit. He wants to talk to us. He wants to guide and help us. He wants to gives us Godly counsel and wisdom. But, we must learn to have “ears to hear” and we must learn to trust the Holy Ghost inside of us who God gave to us as a helper and guide.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: (Proverbs 1:5)
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (John 10:27)
