Scripture for the Day – September 25, 2019

“But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!” (Romans 6:17, The Message Bible)

The word obeyed is the Greek word “hupakouo” which means to hear under (as a subordinate), this is, to listen attentively; by implication to heed or conform to a command or authority: hearken, be obedient to, obey. This word was used particularly of servants who were attentive to the request made of them and who complied. The word contains the ideas of hearing, responding, and obeying. Who are you hearing, responding to, and obeying?

In John 10:27 Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Jesus also said in Jo.hn 14:21 in the Weymouth New Testament: He who has my commandments and obeys them–he it is who loves me.

Romans 6:16 says, “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”

We have counselled with many people over the years and there is one thing we have found out. You can be the best counselors in the world and people will still not do what you suggest. You can show them in the Word of God exactly what God says they should do about a particular situation and they still will not do it. That type of attitude is common in our society because people think they are smarter than God and the counselor. I understand. I have been there in my lifetime. However, I have matured to the point that I realize God’s ways are not my ways. He has much more information than I do and is much wiser than me. So, if he says I am supposed to do something, then I had better be about doing it, and it seems to always work out better that way.

I’m hearing, responding to, and obeying Jesus, His Word, and His Spirit, to the best of my ability. I hope you will too.
