Scripture for the Day (September 28, 2018)
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? (Numbers 23:19)
Many people think lying is no big deal. We have even categorized some lies in our society as “little white lies” which tends to reduce the significance of some lies. We justify other lies by saying that the truth would actually hurt a person so a lie can help prevent the hurt. The problem with that type philosophy is that people do not recognize that lying is a Spirit and it’s not a good Spirit.
Listen to what the Bible says about the origin of lies:
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (John 8:44)
It is very important that we realize that there is no truth in Satan. His very nature is to lie compared to the nature of Jesus which is the truth.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
Did you know that you can get so consumed by a lying spirit that you actually start believing the lies? We met a young woman in Memphis TN that had been convicted of hiring the man that killed her husband. The evidence was overwhelming that she did this but she kept professing her innocence. She would attend our chapel services in prison and we asked the Lord how we were to minister to her. Her whole life had been consumed with lying and she firmly believed she did not do what she was convicted of but the facts told another story. How can that be? It can be because lying is a spirit and that spirit can convince you that a lie is the truth.
That is why we have the court system that we have in this country. People lie!!! Some knowingly and intentionally lie even though they know the truth, but some lie because they have believed a lie. That is why evidence is required in our courts before we convict someone of a crime.
This is what the Lord told us about ministering to this woman that had her husband killed. He said to just keep loving her and preaching truth to her. Keep getting the Word of God in her and it would eventually drive out the lies. The light will drive out the darkness. You know what, it did just that. It took a little while but this young woman gave her life to the Lord and eventually admitted that she did what she was convicted of. That is how extreme lying can become. A person can believe a lie so profoundly that they will go to court and swear under oath that it is the truth and be very convincing and emotional about it.
If you asked people to list the ten worst sins, most people would not have lying on the list. However, God thinks it’s important as evidenced by the following scripture:
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of understanding the destructive nature of lying. The entire human race fell because of it. Just read the story of Adam and Eve and the lies they bought in the Garden. No lie is justified and a half-truth is a whole lie. Satan is the Father of lies, but God is not a man to lie.
Think about this. How important is it for us to know that God will never lie to us? How important is it for us to rely on His Word as truth? I would say, my life and your life depends on it!!!
