Scripture of The Day
If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. (James 1:26)
We have known since childhood that the thigh bone is connected to the knee bone, and James tell us that the heart is connected to the tongue. In fact, James has quite a lot to say about our speech. He reminds us that we can use it to bless or curse, to heal or destroy.
Our language and tone of voice reflect the content of our hearts. If our hearts are in alignment with Christ’s love and purposes, our tongues communicate warmth. forgiveness, acceptance, and wisdom. If our hearts aren’t aligned with God’s mission, however, we may claim to be following Christ, but we are deceiving ourselves.
I remember when this lesson came to my home, when I lashed out at a family member. As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I heard the Holy Spirit say to me, “you know Cheryl, that is in your heart in abundance.” I felt ashamed, and so sorry for the words spoken. From that day forward I became more aware of how powerful my words are. One of my favorite scriptures and one that I pray almost everyday is from Psalm 51:10 and it reads, ” Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” As heart wrenching as it may be to take a fearless and searching inventory of our tongue and our heart, it is better than finding out later that our religion, (our walk with the Lord and our witness) is useless. Luke 6:45…out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks...
Let our words bring forth life and blessing!
