Scripture of The Day

And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”  So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.  But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

(Matthew 14:28-31)

When our daily scripture is discussed, most always it is referred to as the story of Peter walking on the water. Although Peter did walk on the water, he got out of the boat in response to Jesus saying “Come”. The Word of the Lord is what got Peter out of the boat. Peter was actually walking on the Word of Jesus. In fact, he didn’t start sinking until he took his eyes off the Word of God (Jesus).

Verse 30 says that when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid. It is no coincidence that when he got afraid that he started to sink. Fear is the opposite of faith and it will cause you to doubt and sink every time. Jesus knew that and that’s why Jesus asked him in verse 31, “Why did you doubt?”

We have opportunities to step out in faith on God’s Word every day. But if we allow what we see, like circumstances, what others say or think, or even what we think to cause us to get our eyes off the Word of God, we’ll start to sink. Thank God, if we start to sink, He will never leave us nor forsake us and He will save us (Hebrews 13:5). But God’s best for us is to walk above the circumstances.  I like to say it like this. I’m not moved by what I see, think, or feel. I’m only moved by the Word of God!

Incidentally, most people look at Peter sinking as the end result. But Peter cried out to Jesus and Jesus caught him by the hand. And as far as we know Peter walked back to the boat on the water hand in hand with Jesus!  The following is a good confession for all of us to make: “I am not moved by anything but the Word of God. I don’t go by how I feel, but I go by the Word that is real!”

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:1-3)
