Scripture for the Day (October 16, 2015)

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

The Amplified Bible says, “For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not adjusted and adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.”

The Weymouth New Testament says, “No temptation has you in its power but such as is common to human nature; and God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. But, when the temptation comes, He will also provide the way of escape; so that you may be able to bear it.”

God’s way of escape is obedience, which is the path of righteousness. (Psalm 23:3) It’s spending time with God through prayer and the study of His word, being led by God’s Spirit, and being an effectual doer of His Word, not just a hearer.

Romans 6:16 says, “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey–whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”

James 1:14 says, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.”

Giving in to your own desires is not walking in the spirit, but walking in the flesh, which is disobedience to God.

Matthew 26:41 says, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Luke 4:13 says, “Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.” The devil ended the temptation because Jesus kept answering, “it is written”. He kept proclaiming the Word of God.

II Corinthians 10:5 says, “Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,”

The English Standard Version says, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Jesus,” Satan, the evil one, raises arguments and opinions against the knowledge of God which is the Word of God. That’s why we need to keep proclaiming the Word of God while watching in prayer.

Luke 8:13 says, “But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.”

God’s Word and His Spirit are a light in the time of temptation to lead you out if you’ll believe and act on that belief in complete obedience.
