Scripture of The Day

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.  (Colossians 4:2)

I get many calls and prayer requests from mothers who want me to pray for their children.  Most of these requests are for adult children, who were brought up Christian but have strayed from the faith or just quit God altogether.  As our children become of age and go out on their own, they get to make their own decisions and just like us, some of those decisions are not always in their best interest.

There was this precious couple who were praying for their daughter to return to faith in Jesus.  One of their friends, Kevin, handed them a piece of paper that was found in his mom’s Bible. ” I hope this encourages you,” Kevin said.  At the top of the note were the words, “For my son, Kevin.”  Below them was a prayer for his salvation.  “I carry this note with me in my bible today,”  Kevin explained.  My mother prayed for me for 35 years.  I was far away from God, and I’m a believer now.” Kevin looked intently at the couple and smiled through his tears: “Never give up praying for your daughter–no matter how long it takes.”

Kevin’s words made me think of the introduction to a story Jesus told about prayer in the gospel of Luke.  Luke begins with the words, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” (Luke 18:1) We can be encouraged whenever we pray to know that God hears and welcomes our prayers.  I truly believe that prayer changes things!!  Pray, be watchful, and be thankful!! And don’t give up praying!
