And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? (Luke 6:39)
By Ed Henderson
I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that a type of blindness is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. When I talk about blindness I’m talking about spiritual and common sense blindness, not physical blindness. Some truths are just so clear in the Word of God and yet some people just don’t see them at all. In fact, these people (some of which are leaders in our
society) are not just blind to the truth but they fight against the truth with more and more vigor and hatred.
Let’s take a look at the Word of God and see what it says about some of the main things that causes blindness. Religious Traditions – In Matthew 23 and Mark 7 Jesus addressed the Pharisees about the blindness they were sowing into the lives of the people with their religious traditions, which were making the Word of God of no effect. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. (Matthew 23:23-25)
Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. (Mark 7:13) Self Centered vs. God Centered – For their [moral] understanding is darkened and their reasoning is clouded; [they are] alienated and self-banished from the life of God [with no share in it; this is] because of the [willful] ignorance and spiritual blindness that is [deep-seated] within them, because of the hardness and insensitivity of their heart. (Ephesians 4:18, Amplified Bible) For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (1 John 2:16)
Arrogance – There was no person more arrogant, more educated, more religious, and more self-centered and blinded than Paul was before he met Jesus on the Damascus road. And Aanias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. (Acts 9:17-19)
Because you say, “I am rich, and have prospered and grown wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked [without hope and in great need], (Revelation 3:17, Amplified Bible)
Bribery, Gifts, and Financial Influences – And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous. (Exodus 23:8, KJV) You shall take no bribe, for the bribe blinds those who have sight and perverts the testimony and the cause of the righteous. (Exodus 23:8, AMPC) The bottom line is that Jesus wants even the Pauls of this world to have the scales removed. But a Damascus road experience is going to be necessary for many. That is where you come in. You are the only Jesus some are going to see on this earth so be His hands, be His feet, and be His voice. Reach as many as you can!!! Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.” (John 9:39, NLT)
