Scripture for the Day – January 30, 2020

“Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory [is] above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13

Throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us through His various names. When we study the names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we better understand who God really is. The meanings behind God’s names reveal the central personality, nature, and character of the One who bears them. The following are just a select few of those names correlated with New Testament scriptures. What I want you to see here is the fact that God has not changed. Jesus was the exact representation of the Father and His Father’s heart.

Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah, the Self-Existent One) – And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you. (Exodus 3:14)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts, The Lord of Powers, Lord of the Armies) – The Lord of Hosts is the King of all Heaven and Earth (Psalm 24:9-10)
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. (Revelation 17:14)

Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner, The Lord my Miracle) – He gives us victory in spiritual warfare.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. (Revelation 19:11-14)

El Elyon (The Most High God, the Most Exalted God)
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (Philippians 2:9)

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) – the All-Sufficient One – This refers to God completely nourishing, satisfying, and supplying His people with all their needs as a mother would her child.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) – A shepherd is one who feeds or leads his flock to pasture.
What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. (Matthew 18:12-14)

Jehovah Rapha (The Lord Who Heals) – This denotes a God who reveals Himself unceasingly as a healer. Rapha (râpâ’) means “to restore”, “to heal” or “to make healthy.”
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. (Acts 10:38)

Jehovah Jireh (the Lord will provide) He is our source of life in every way.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

El Olam (The Everlasting God, The God of Eternity, The God of the Universe, The God of Ancient Days)
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) – Shalom is a derivative of shâlêm (which means “to be complete” or “sound”) Shalom is translated as “peace” or “absence from strife.” He is our shelter in the storm.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27)
