Scripture for the Day (November 20, 2015)
And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? (Luke 12:42)
In the scriptures just before this parable Jesus was talking to His disciples about being ready for His return. He had told them that the servants that were found watching and ready for His return would be the ones that would sit at His dinner table and He would gird himself and serve them (can you even imagine that picture). Here again we see the servant attitude of Jesus versus the carnal attitude of “lording it over” servants or employees.
Peter wanted more clarification (just like Peter) so he asked Jesus if this was meant just for his disciples or was it meant for everybody? Jesus responded with his parable. Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all. (Luke 12:43)
Here we are back to the foundational truth we have talked about many times before. It is not enough to know the Word of God. Jesus is looking for people that are doing the Word. We are back to the scripture in James 1:22 that says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”.
The truth has been entrusted to believers in the form of the Bible. The truth will set you free but it will first make you personally very uncomfortable and some people will hate you for it. Jesus understands that very well. He was crucified on a cross for it! Christians are still being slaughtered for it. Jesus understands the very dividing nature of the Word of God:
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: (Luke 12:49-51)
I don’t think we realize the spiritual significance of doing the Word that we have been entrusted with. It is not enough to have a Doctorate in Theology; it is not enough to be a member of a Christian church; it is not enough to never miss a Sunday school class; it is not enough to be a member of a Christian family. We deceive our own selves if we camp in those areas alone. Here are the questions we have to ask ourselves. Are we leading people to the Lord? Are we laying hands on the sick? Are we casting out demons? Are we ministering to the widows and orphans? Are we feeding the hungry and clothing the naked? Are we doing the Word???
Don’t get me wrong, I am not promoting a works theology. It is a love theology that I promote. It is a theology of obedience not because we have to, but because we want to.
I don’t know about you but I want to be at that dinner table when Jesus comes back. I want to be ready and watching for His return. I want to be counted in that number. How about you?
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. (Luke 12:48)
