Scripture for the Day March 29, 2019
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord (Jehovah), and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord (Jehovah) your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the Lord (Jehovah). (Exodus 6:6-8)
After 400 years of slavery the Israelites were locked into despair, despondency, and unbelief. Frustration and fear dominated them until they were completely at the mercy of the enemy. They needed a word wherein they could have faith and it came directly from God as contained in His name, Jehovah. Let’s look and see exactly what was contained in the name, Jehovah.
Seven times God says, “I Will.”
1. I Will Bring You Out. This is God’s first declaration. He did not tell them how or when, only that He would. No explanation was offered, only that they were to have confidence that He, who was His Name, would bring it to pass. They were to trust His substance, His word and not their circumstances, regardless of delay. There is deliverance in
Jehovah!
2. I Will Rid You of Their Bondage. Egypt was the most powerful nation on the earth at the time and no other earthly power could overcome them. Israel knew God as the “All Sufficient One”, but now through the announcement of His Name (Jehovah) His sufficiency will personally deliver them. Israel was powerless to free itself. Then, I Am said, I will be your
freedom!
3. I Will Redeem You With An Outstretched Arm. Redemption is more than just setting one free; it involves paying all the debts in full. Their slave days were rapidly ending; their domination by a heathen society closing. Jehovah, the covenant keeper, will be their redeemer who will purchase them, pay off their debts, set then free, and carry them unto Himself. Jehovah said, “I will redeem!”
4. I Will Take You To Me For A People. There is adoption in Jehovah, but not until they are completely free from Egypt. When they left Egypt, God said it would be the beginning of time for them (Exodus 12:2). They were to be a new people with a completely new manner of life as His people. They may have been slaves, bound, beaten, and forsaken, yet they were redeemed and brought into God’s family. Such is the love entwined in the name, Jehovah!
5. I Will Be Your God. Now that they had a future with a promise, He would be their Protector. From that date forward Israel lived under His care as their protector – God, and as their physician – God. Everything pertaining to life and godliness was theirs.
6. I Will Bring You Into The Land. There is security in Jehovah for this nation birthed in Egypt’s slavery. After 430 years of poverty, want, and slavery, God WILLS them real security. They will produce such an abundance that they will lend to many nations but they will never borrow from them (Deut. 28:12). He said I will bring you OUT in order to bring you INTO my Word and promises. He brought them into a blessed union with Himself. He said I will be your God and all that God is, I’ll be to you! My name is Jehovah!
7. I Will Give To You For A Heritage. In Jehovah there is an inheritance, incorruptible and unfading. The land is His land and when anyone attempts to separate it from His promise, they are separating God himself. He willed the land to Israel because of His sworn oath to Abraham!
God completes His seven declarations by saying again, “I am Jehovah!” These seven “I Wills” are guarantees enwrapped in that blessed name of promise, upon God’s faithfulness to His own character. Jehovah unfolds the meaning of His presence by delivering His people from all bondages, by redeeming them, by making them His own, by bringing them from a place of darkness into His eternal dwellings, and by bringing them into His own presence. They were to know deliverance, freedom, redemption, adoption, fatherhood, security and an eternal inheritance.
Now, through Jesus Christ, these same promises (these same “I Wills”) are available to all the world!!!
