Scripture for the Day – July 31, 2019
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation (affliction, anguish, pressure, trouble): but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
How many of you have been in trouble? How many of you are in trouble right now? There are all types of trouble. My wife and I have experienced our share of trouble. We almost got a divorce in the first year of our marriage because of my stupidity. We were separated for a while but we got back together and I am so glad we did. That was 53 years, three sons, and eight grandchildren ago.
One of our sons was on drugs for a very long time. That was hell!!! He ended up in jail for theft but he is free now. He married a no non-sense girl that would not put up with drugs and they now have two daughters (our grand-daughters) that are just the best. He has been free from drugs for years now and is a great father. Thank you Jesus!!!
We recently lost one of our daughter-in-law’s to a house fire and that was a terrible tragedy. Our son Danny and his wife Kari had four children and two of those are still at home. It has been a tough situation for our son and his entire family, but God has brought them through it with great grace and mercy.
We are not exempt from trouble just because we are a Christians. The rain falls on the just and the unjust. The question is, how do you handle it? Some people can’t handle it because they don’t have the Lord to walk with them through it.
I love to watch professional golf tournaments. I once played a lot of golf but my back and my age has me watching it on television now. I was watching the Senior Open this weekend. Bernhard Langer won that tournament in less than ideal weather conditions. Bernhard has been an outstanding golfer for years. He is not flashy. He’s just really good. I can remember years ago when he gave his life to the Lord. He has not been one to say a lot about his faith. He just walks it out.
At the presentation of the winning trophy Bernhard was thanking different people for their help and sponsorship. He then thanked his Pastor for something I have never heard him say before. He said his Pastor had given him a small piece of paper with a Bible verse on it at the beginning of the tournament. Berhard put that piece of paper in his pocket and kept it there throughout the entire tournament. He pulled that piece of paper out of his pocket and read this Bible verse to the television audience: Many are the troubles of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him from them all. (Psalm 34:19, EHV)
Bernhard told the people that the golf course they just played, along with the weather and the multitude of sand traps, presented a lot of trouble for the golfers, but life brings trouble also. He just wanted everyone to know, in his own simple way, that the Lord will deliver them from them all. Thank you Bernhard for a simple but very profound message!!!
