Scripture for the Day (August 10, 2018)

Walking along the beach of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishing, throwing their nets into the lake. It was their regular work. Jesus said to them, “Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass.” They didn’t ask questions, but simply dropped their nets and followed. (Matthew 4:18-20,The Message)

Every one of us was raised in different environments. Some were told by our parents and teachers that we were the “best thing since sliced bread” (an old Southern saying). Others were told you would never amount to anything (how sad). Some graduated from college and some never graduated from high school. Some are short and some are tall. Some are athletic and some are not. We are all influenced by these type things and we have a tendency to build our identity on those factors. But who are you really?

Are you a fisherman just because your family were all fishermen? Are you what people say you are, or what God says you are? Is your personal identity based on comparisons with others, or is it based on the Word of God?

There is a great song by Lauren Daigle entitled “YOU Say” that addresses this very topic. The following are some of the words from that song followed by a link to the song on YouTube. Click on the YouTube link. It’s a must listen!!!

YOU say I am loved, When I can’t feel a thing; YOU say I am strong, When I think I am weak;

YOU say I am held, When I am falling short; When I don’t belong, YOU say I am YOURS.

And I believe, Oh I Believe, What YOU say of me, I believe.

The only thing that matters now is everything YOU think of me, In YOU I find my worth, in YOU I find my identity.

You are what God says you are!!! You are more than a conqueror; you are the head and not the tail; you are His child; you are an overcomer; you can do all things through Christ; all things are possible to those that believe for it is your faith that overcomes the world.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; (1 Peter 2:9)

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:34-39)

Just remember this. You are not what people say you are. You are not what the enemy says you are. You are what the Word of God says you are!!!
