Scripture for the Day (November 6, 2018)
“There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4).
Because of the sin of man, giants were on the earth. The giants were large and intimidating. Not only were they intimidating to the sight, but their mouths were intimidating also. There was a giant named Goliath, who intimidated the Hebrews with his size and with his mouth. He shouted words of defeat to the army under Saul, the king. And Saul and all his men stood at a distance in fear.
It was only when David, a young shepherd boy who had no fear, stepped before the giant that the people of God had the possibility of victory. When fear reigns, there is no faith. In fear, there is no possibility of victory because fear is the assurance of defeat. However, when faith steps forward, victory is not only a possibility, but victory is assured.
First Samuel 17:49-51 describes David’s victory: “Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him.”But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.”
Two things overpowered the giant – the rock and the sword. Today the same two things will overpower the giant in your life: Jesus is the cornerstone and His Word is the sword. Second Corinthians 10:3-5 says, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
The world has discovered that you cannot negotiate with terrorists. Likewise, you cannot negotiate with demonic spirits. So when that giant of financial problems, sickness and disease, or anything else that comes against you stands in your path, remember that the giant is only a physical representation of a spiritual source. Use the weapons supplied by the Father through His Son (Ephesians 6:10-18).
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
