“How long will you torment my soul, and break me in pieces with words”    ( Job 19:2)

By Ed Henderson

In our scripture for the day we hear Job’s response to his friends and the words they have spoken to him. They were supposed to be Job’s comforters but they were Job’s tormentors. Job said, “Your words break me in pieces.” Words have the power to make or break you.

Proverbs 16:24 says, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”
Matthew 12:37 says, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Ephesians 5:6 says, “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience”

Words are containers that carry messages, and those messages bring life or death.
Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Words come from the heart and the mind, so what you spend your time putting into you will eventually come out of you (in words).

Matthew 12:34 says, “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Matthew 12:35 says, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.”

Jesus said in Mark 11:23 that, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Whoever says and does not doubt, but believes, he will have what he says.” This is more than just a positive confession; this is the confession of faith according to Hebrews 10:23. I heard one preacher say it like this, “Jesus said we could have what we say, but most people are just saying what they have.  ”Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (Psalm 1:3)
