While Shepherds Watched

December 23, 2025

Scripture Of The Day

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Luke 2:8-10

During this season, take some time and read Luke 2:8-18. Have you ever thought why God announced the birth of His Son to the shepherds? The King had come, and no one had been ready to receive Him. Nobody even knew He was here except Mary, Joseph, and the farm animals. There was no welcoming party. I would have thought there would have been a party for the newborn King.

As I read the Christmas story, I can imagine how terrified the shepherds must have been at the appearance of the angels. I am sure that they never expected to see such a sight.

So, why did God choose the shepherds? Well, maybe like me, they were awake late at night. Maybe because they were watching. Maybe because they were nearby. Maybe God wanted some humans to notice what had happened and celebrate. The angels dropped in on the shepherds and invited them to praise the newborn King! I have often thought that God saw the shepherds watching over their sheep, and God wanted them to know the one who watches over them.

What else could the shepherds do but say, "Let's go see this thing." Once they saw Him, they had no choice but to share Him. As they went on their way, they began to spread the word about the Messiah. When you meet Him, you just have to tell somebody.

I am thankful for this Good Shepherd, who seeks us when we are lost and carries us to safety. Let's celebrate the King of Kings. It is time to have a party!
