Scripture for the Day (November 1, 2016)
For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known. (Luke 12:2)
There is a great account in the Bible of a very wicked couple (King Ahab and Queen Jezebel) that chronicles the tactics of an evil and powerful couple. This couple thought that sin was just a trivial matter (1 Kings 16:31). The rules did not apply to them. Lying, stealing, and even murder was no big deal. They killed the prophets of God and appointed their own ungodly prophets. They built an altar to worship Baal. They lied and conspired against their neighbor Naboth and had him stoned to death just to gain control of his vineyard. This couple was a real piece of work.
Listen to what the Bible said about this pair:
And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him. (1 Kings 16:30)
And Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him. (1 Kings 16:33)
But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up. (1 Kings 21:25)
The scheming against Naboth to gain a parcel of land was the last straw for God. He told Elijah to go and meet King Ahab in the vineyard that they had killed Naboth for and prophesy to him. Elijah met Ahab as directed and the following is what he prophesied to him:
I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin. And of Jezebel also spake the Lord, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat. (1 Kings 21:20-24)
In 2 Kings 9 we see the account of the selection and anointing of Jehu to carry out the destruction of the House of Ahab, including Jezebel. It is important to see what happened during Jehu’s confrontation with Jezebel. The Bible’s account is as follows:
And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window. And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master? And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot. (2 Kings 9:30-33)
There are some important things that we need to see here. No matter how powerful we are, God knows what we have done. And no matter how much we try to hide behind the trappings of royalty, fame, or power, our servants, employees, or close friends know what we have done. It was the two or three eunuchs that ultimately threw Jezebel down. These were Jezebel’s closest confidants. They served her night and day and were sworn to secrecy. But, when Jehu, a man anointed by God showed up on the scene and asked, “Who is on my side?” they made the choice to save themselves and throw her down. At some point, servants will always get tired of protecting an evil master.
What you and I do still matters, even in the world we live in. Sin is not a trivial matter. What you and I do in the dark is not unknown. God knows, our closest confidants know, and we know. If we walk in the light as He is in the light, and keep short accounts with God, we will never have to worry about the things coming back to bite us at the most inopportune time.
