Don’t Quit In The Pit

Scripture Of The Day

I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.  He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. (Psalm 40:1-3)

By Cheryl Henderson

I receive a lot of calls from people looking for a church, needing prayer, and sometimes from people who just want to share their pain. This is supposed to be a joyous time of the year. However, for some, it is a hard time of the year. I read a book years ago titled “Don’t Quit In The Pit.” I thought about that book, and I want to encourage anyone who is struggling in the pit, don’t quit in the pit! According to our scripture today, God has never called us to be in a pit! In fact, he came to deliver us out of that pit and set our feet on the Rock, that is, Jesus!

There are many ways we end up in the pit. Sometimes we are thrown in the pit, sometimes we slip into the pit, and sometimes we jump into the pit. But you are not called to be in a pit! I have been in the pit, and I hated it! I wasn’t sure how to get out. Every day for several days, I would get in a quiet place, get the Bible, put it in my lap, and sit and stare at it. I tried to read it, but all I could do was stare at it. I would sometimes cry out to God and say, “Jesus, help me!” On one of those days, as I was staring at the Bible in my lap, I heard the Lord speak to my heart. He asked me 3 questions, and I answered yes to each one. Then He said to me, “Then what is your problem?” At that very moment, the dark cloud lifted and I was free! When my husband came home from work that night, I met him at the door and said, “Honey, I’m free!!” He said, ” It’s about time, Praise God!”

I don’t have three easy steps for getting out of the pit. All I know to do in any situation is run to the throne. I listen to worship music, read the Bible, and talk to God, that is, pray. My 3 steps would be the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I encourage you today, don’t quit in the pit. Call on your deliverer, and He will hear you!
