Scripture Of The Day
“Do not get drunk with wine, in which is dissipation (wastefulness); but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18
Excerpts by Marilyn Greer
The Spirit-filled life is a command. In Ephesians 5:18, there are two commands, both of which require obedience; they are not optional, they are imperative.
“Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation (wastefulness); but be filled with the Spirit.”
The Apostle Paul is saying that rather than be filled with wine, so as to be under its influence, Christians should be filled with the Holy Spirit, so as to be under God’s influence.
An intoxicated person is not in control. He is controlled by whatever he has within. Those under the influence of alcohol or drugs will walk (stagger), talk (slur speech), and think differently (foolishly). It should be just as obvious when a child of God is under the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit. He should walk (in love, in wisdom, circumspectly), talk (truthfully, kindly), and think differently (have spiritual wisdom and understanding).
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost inspired and enabled each believer to speak the mighty things of God, declaring confidently the gospel of Jesus Christ. The 12 disciples had drunk of the new wine of the Spirit of the living God. Out of their innermost beings began to flow rivers of life.
Whatever is in you will come out of you if you have consumed enough. Every child of God should be receiving DUI’s—not “driving under the influence”, but “discipling under the influence” of the Holy Spirit. Remember, that with which you are filled will control your attitude and actions.
