Choose Life

Scripture Of The Day

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him.” —Deuteronomy 30:19–20

By Cheryl Henderson

When my youngest son was about four or five years old, he came home from church and excitedly told me, “Mommy, I learned a new song at church today!” Then he began to sing, “Shut the door, keep the devil in the night…shut the door, keep out the devil.”

At the time, I thought it was adorable. But over the years, those simple words have become a powerful reminder to me.

God has given us a choice: life or death, blessings or curses. And we have an enemy who is a master deceiver. He knows how to make the wrong things look good. Just ask Eve.

There are many doors in our lives, and we get to choose which ones we open. Before I walk through a door, I try to line my decision up with God’s Word, pause, and pray for discernment. I ask myself, Where will this choice lead? Will it produce life or death? Will it make things better or worse? How will it affect the people around me?

Genesis 4:7 warns us that sin is “crouching at the door” and desires to have us. The enemy is always looking for an opportunity to enter. So today, be intentional about the doors you open—and the ones you keep firmly shut.

Don’t leave even the smallest crack open for the enemy. Shut the door and keep him out. Then hold fast to Jesus and His way of doing things, one choice at a time.
