Grieve Not The Holy Spirit

Scripture Of The Day

And grieve not the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30

By Cheryl Henderson

I often teach about the Holy Spirit and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Recently, however, I have been getting to know the Holy Spirit in a much deeper and more personal way. During my study the other day, I came across something that caused me to stop and reflect. In fact, our Scripture of the Day stopped me in my tracks.

The word grieve comes from the Greek word lupete, which describes the deep pain experienced between two people who love each other deeply. It is similar to the hurt a husband or wife feels upon discovering the unfaithfulness of their spouse. That thought deeply impacted me. I don't know about you, but I never want to cause the Holy Spirit grief.

The Holy Spirit is the One who comforts us, guides us, protects us, strengthens us, and imparts wisdom to us. He is our constant Helper and faithful Companion. The thought of causing Him pain should cause all of us to pause and examine our hearts.

When we begin to think, speak, and act like the world, we can grieve the Holy Spirit and cause the pain of betrayal. Remember, the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity—God dwelling within us. If we recognize areas in our lives that are not pleasing to Him, we should quickly confess our sins and receive the cleansing that comes through the blood of Jesus. Through repentance, fellowship is restored, and our relationship with Him remains strong.

I do not want to live a single day apart from the Holy Spirit's presence and guidance.

Before rushing into the demands of your day, take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything in your attitudes, words, or actions that has caused Him grief. Then pray:

"Holy Spirit, forgive me for allowing my attitudes and actions to dishonor You. Beginning today, I desire to live each moment to please You. Help me to walk in obedience, sensitivity, and love so that I never cause You grief. In Jesus' name, Amen."
