It Starts With Me

Scripture Of The Day

"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone" (NIV). Romans 12:18

By Cheryl Henderson

I don't know about you, but today's verse has always challenged me. Paul didn't write the book of Romans while relaxing on a peaceful vacation surrounded by kind people and perfect circumstances. He wrote it in the middle of opposition, hardship, and conflict. In fact, it seems that everywhere Paul went to serve the Lord, resistance followed. His life was anything but peaceful.

Yet, knowing the challenges the Roman believers would face, Paul wrote these words: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:18)

I can relate. Like you, I face hardships, ongoing opposition, and relational differences as I navigate this broken world. That's why this verse speaks so deeply to me.

Author Lysa TerKeurst wisely said, "Peace isn't the absence of hostility; peace is the atmosphere we can bring into hostility." What a powerful reminder! We may not be able to control another person's attitude or actions, but we can choose the spirit we bring into every situation.

Living at peace with everyone may seem impossible. But with Jesus living in us, the impossible becomes possible. When we respond with His love, patience, and peace instead of anger or offense, people notice. Our lives become a testimony that Christ truly lives within us.

There is nothing more powerful to bring into a difficult situation than the Prince of Peace Himself. Wherever Jesus is welcomed, peace has a way of following. So today, instead of waiting for someone else to change, let it start with you.
