No matter what you do in this world, whether in ministry or in business, good relationships with people will always be critical. You may be a great “people” person or you may not be. Nevertheless, relationships are a huge part of your life and they will be a key determining factor in your success or failure. Whether it’s relatives, friends, business associates, or church family, you will always be dealing with people so it is extremely important to work on your people skills.
I’m not sure about you, but I want to influence others for God. In order to do that I have learned there are two things I must do. First, I must place a high value on people (God does). Secondly, I must try to understand people. That includes expecting the best in others and giving them my friendship with no strings attached. I must engage if I expect to connect with them.
I have spent a considerable amount of time over the last 33 years of ministry counselling with people from all walks of life. Here are a few things I have learned about bridging the gap, and connecting with others, that will hopefully assist you in your own relationships:
1. People for the most part are insecure, so give them CONFIDENCE.
2. People want to feel special, so sincerely COMPLIMENT them.
3. People desire a better tomorrow, so offer them HOPE.
4. People need to be understood, so LISTEN to them.
5. People are basically self-centered, so SPEAK TO THEIR NEEDS first.
6. People get emotionally low, so ENCOURAGE them.
7. People want to be associated with success, so HELP THEM TO WIN!
When you truly try to understand people, and help them to succeed, you lay the
groundwork for a great relationship and you help influence them for God!!
