Scripture for the Day – August 18, 2020
I Peter 2:24: Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
The Amplified Bible says it like this in 1 Peter 2:24, ”He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”
In 1 Peter he is quoting from an Old Testament prophecy by the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
Some have said that the healing mentioned in Isaiah was not physical but spiritual healing. But we have another reference to Isaiah’s quote in Matthew, which points to physical healing.
Matthew 8:16-17: When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.”
In Mark 16 Jesus instructed us to go into all the world and preach the gospel and to lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
Acts 28:8: And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him. Paul was simply acting on the words of Jesus in Mark 16 when He laid hands on the father of Publius.
Psalm 107:20: He sent His word and healed them.
Sickness is a part of the curse according to Deuteronomy 28, but according to Galatians 3:13: Christ (The “Word”) has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”).
Again, Peter by the Holy Spirit looking back on what Jesus did, wrote in the past tense. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes we were healed.” That’s why we aren’t waiting on God to heal us; we just need to appropriate by faith what has already been provided by the stripes of Jesus Christ. We are redeemed from sickness by the stripes of Jesus.
