Don’t Grieve The Holy Spirit

Scripture Of The Day

And grieve not the Holy Spirit.  Ephesians 4:30

By Cheryl Henderson

I often teach on the Holy Spirit and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I have been getting to know the Holy Spirit in a whole new way. In my study, I read something the other day that caused me to pause. Our scripture of the day stopped me in my tracks.

The word “grieve” comes from the Greek word lupete. It denotes pain experienced between 2 people who are deeply in love. It is like a husband or a wife who’s just discovered that their mate has been unfaithful. I am not sure about you, but I do not want to cause the Holy Spirit to grieve. Remember that the Holy Spirit is the one who comforts us, protects us, guides us, strengthens us, and gives us wisdom. I never want to do anything to cause Him pain.

When we start talking and acting like the world, we cause the Holy Spirit to experience the pain of betrayal. Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity. He is God inside you! If our behavior has been wrong, we should confess our sin and receive cleansing through the blood of Jesus so we can be restored to fellowship. I do not want to do anything without the Holy Spirit.

Before rushing out into your hectic day, ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything that has caused Him grief. Then pray, forgive me for allowing my attitudes and actions to dishonor you. Starting today, I want to live every moment with the intent to please You and never cause You grief again. In Jesus’ name. Amen
