Scripture Of The Day

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

By Cheryl Henderson (Excerpts from Bob Gass Ministries)

One day, a man stopped at a gas station and asked the attendant to wash his windshield. When the attendant finished, the man looked through the glass and complained, “That’s a terrible job. My windshield is just as dirty as when you started.”

The attendant politely cleaned it again. After inspecting it a second time, the man said in frustration, “That windshield hasn’t changed a bit!”

His wife, who had been sitting quietly beside him, had finally had enough. She reached over, removed his glasses, wiped them clean, and handed them back. The attendant had been doing his job correctly all along—the problem wasn’t the windshield; it was the man’s glasses.

Spiritually speaking, the lens through which you view life determines what you see and how you see it. When you look through the lens of jealousy and envy, you become resentful of the blessings of others. When you look through the lens of judgment, you speak and act without mercy or grace. When you look through the lens of fear and unbelief, you limit what God can do in your life. When you look through the lens of selfishness, you put yourself first, and those around you suffer. When you look through the lens of negativity and cynicism, people begin to distance themselves because your outlook drains rather than encourages.

Just as glasses must be cleaned regularly from the dirt and dust that accumulate on them, our hearts and minds must be cleansed from the contamination of this world. There is no place in God's Church for racism, bitterness, hatred, or unforgiveness. No matter what we have experienced in the past, we cannot allow those hurts to dictate our future.

No one who ever lived had more reason to be bitter than Jesus. He was rejected, mocked, betrayed, and crucified. Yet He chose to love, forgive, and ultimately give His life for us. How do we keep our hearts clean? Jesus said, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” (John 15:3).

Our perspective on life remains clear when we know Jesus, meditate on His Word, and walk in His love. We cannot claim to love God while harboring hatred toward our brother or sister. God's love cleanses our vision, changes our perspective, and enables us to see others through His eyes.
