The Little Word “IF”

Scripture Of The Day

"If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. ' " Matthew 4:3

By Cheryl Henderson

I will never forget the first time a passage from the Gospels struck me with fresh clarity — the account of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. In Matthew, the tempter tries to sow doubt into Jesus’ mind: “If you are the Son of God…”—he says it twice. Then he dares to demand worship. The audacity! The enemy knew exactly who Jesus was, yet he still lied. Each time Jesus replied, “It is written,” and stood firm. In that moment, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to spiritual warfare.

Be careful with the little word if. The enemy uses “if” to weaken your confidence, to make you question God’s Word and even your own identity. Faith is what pleases God, so we must trust Him and act on His commands.

In the desert, the devil tried Jesus three times — with bread, power, and fame — just before Jesus began His public ministry. Why would the tempter push Jesus to worship him, even before breaking His fast? Because his tactics haven’t changed: he still uses the same lies against us. Don’t let doubt and unbelief make you step back, stay silent, or sit down when God is calling you to stand and go forth.

Guard your heart against the “ifs.” Close the door to doubt and choose faith.
