Wishy Washy

Scripture Of The Day

That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. (James 1:7-8) ESV

I have always loved the book of James. To me, it is one of the most practical books in the New Testament. James doesn't just tell us what to believe—he shows us how to live. He deals with real-life issues like pride, gossip, selfish ambition, materialism, and the importance of genuine faith. Every time I read it, I find myself challenged to grow.

One passage that has spoken deeply to my heart over the years is James 4:7-8. It reminds me of the importance of living with a single-minded devotion to Christ. I don't want to be, as my mother would call it, wishy-washy. James calls it double-minded.

The world we live in constantly pulls us in different directions. We wear busyness like a badge of honor, and multitasking has become the norm. But the more I study God's Word, the more I realize that a divided mind leads to a divided heart. When our focus is scattered, our purpose becomes blurred. We start giving pieces of ourselves to so many things that we no longer give our whole heart to the One who matters most.

Experts now tell us that multitasking is often the myth of productivity. I believe double-mindedness is the myth of fulfillment. We think we can hold on to the things of God while still clinging to the things of the world. We think we can walk by faith while entertaining fear and doubt. Yet James says a double-minded person is unstable, like a wave of the sea tossed by the wind. That is not the life God has called us to live.

One of the strongest marks of a double-minded person is divided loyalty. We cannot be devoted to purity while embracing sin. We cannot trust God's promises while continually agreeing with our fears. God isn't looking for perfection, but He is looking for hearts that are fully His.

Today, take a moment to ask yourself, "What has been competing for my attention and affection?" Is there something that has quietly taken your focus off of Jesus? Is worry replacing trust? Is busyness crowding out your time with Him? Is the opinion of others becoming more important than the voice of God? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be wishy-washy!
